5. AWARD CRITERIA. The Sumner I. Kimball Award will be authorized when a unit meets or
exceeds 90 percent of the total possible score (enclosure 1) during a regularly scheduled biennial
Standardization Team (STANTEAM) readiness assessment. Though various aspects of a unit's
performance are observed during an assessment, only the measurements outlined in enclosure (1)
will be used in determining award eligibility.
6. RECOGNITION.
a. Shore units meeting the provisions of this Instruction will be presented with the Sumner I.
Kimball Pennant for temporary exterior display on the unit flagpole and a plaque for permanent
interior display.
b. The unit will be authorized to fly the pennant until completion of the next STANTEAM visit. If
the unit earns a subsequent award, the pennant will remain in place, and the subsequent award
date shall be added to the Sumner I. Kimball plaque.
c. Commandant (G-OCS) will notify the unit, via the chain of command, of the award
authorization. Plaque and pennant will be presented at an appropriate ceremony.
7. PROCEDURES. Commandant (G-OCS) shall be responsible for coordinating changes and funding
this program as appropriate.
8. ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT and IMPACT CONSIDERATIONS. Environmental considerations
were examined in the development of this Instruction and have been determined to be not applicable.
9. FORMS/REPORTS. None.
