1.
PURPOSE. This instruction establishes procedures for the procurement and cost sharing of
contemporary prescription eyewear. The contents of this instruction apply to all active duty
Coast Guard personnel.
2.
DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. Commandant Instruction 6490.1, Contemporary Prescription
Eyewear Procurement, is canceled.
3.
BACKGROUND. This pilot program for active duty Coast Guard members was established
to give active duty members the option of cost sharing nonstandard prescription eyewear.

DISCUSSION.
a.
As a work-life improvement measure, Commandant (G-K) has instituted this cost-
sharing program as a permanent option to provide contemporary prescription eyewear
for active duty Coast Guard personal who are eligible for standard eyewear, aviation
glasses, and boat crewman goggles, and active duty personnel from other uniformed
services detailed to the Coast Guard. A contract with UNICOR, Federal Prisons
Industries, Butner, NC has been established which allows active duty members to order
contemporary eyewear directly from UNICOR Optics at a significant savings.
