Categories that will be considered are:
(1)
CUTTERS shall be named for geographic locations; famous battles; other service
ships that were manned by Coast Guard personnel; flowers/trees; birds; lakes; Indian
tribes; Greek gods; winds; bays; rivers; action words; famous past cutters; islands;
points; capes; Secretaries of the Department under which the Coast Guard was
serving at the time of their tenure; former Commandants; Coast Guard heroes or
other very distinguished Coast Guard personnel; tools; nautical gear (e.g. vice, bitt,
chock, anvil, etc.).
(2)
BUILDINGS shall be named after individuals who have historical significance to
the Coast Guard. They include but are not limited to Coast Guard people who are
firsts/lasts; those who died in action/line of duty; war heroes; people who had a
significant impact on Coast Guard history; Lifesaving, Lighthouse and Revenue
Cutter Service personnel; lifesaving medal winners.
(3)
OUTDOOR FACILITIES (streets, circles, lanes, parking lots, athletic facilities,
waterfront facilities, air fields, hangars, etc.) shall be named for Coast Guard cutters,
historically significant people, famous battles, nautical terms, lighthouse, light
stations, lifesaving stations, or noteworthy rescues.
(4)
Other categories of names that a nominating official substantiates as appropriate
may be considered by the board.
5.
RESPONSIBILITIES.
a.
The Commandant has appointed a standing board to make recommendations for cutter
names, to review nominations for facility names, and to recommend sponsors for ship
commissionings. It is the responsibility of this board to review all nominations and make
recommendations to the Commandant for final approval.
b.
Commandant (G-CP) chairs the board consisting of representatives from Commandant (G-
C-5), (G-CMCPO), (G-Nd), (G-Od), (G-Ed), (G-CP/Historian), and (G-CP-3).
