COMMANDANT INSTRUCTION 5726.10B
Subj: Policy for Naming of Cutters and Shore Facilities
1.
PURPOSE. This Instruction clarifies policy governing the naming of cutters and prominent
institutional facilities. It is not the intent of the instruction that previously named facilities be
renamed. This instruction is directed to all floating and shore units.
2.
DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. COMDTINST 5726.10A is cancelled.
3.
BACKGROUND.
a.
Cutters have traditionally been named for geographic locations, flowers/trees, Indian
tribes, winds, bays, islands, points, capes, tools/nautical terms, etc.
b.
Facilities have generally been named to honor the memory of heroic or distinguished
officers and enlisted personnel of the Service. Such names have been used to designate
barracks, halls, recreational facilities, classroom buildings, wings, rooms, training
facilities, housing units, maintenance buildings, streets, etc.
4.
DISCUSSION.
a.

(1)
Cutters: All ships 65 feet and over.
(2)

classroom buildings, streets, athletic facilities, waterfront facilities, air fields,
