Subj: United Services Organization (USO)
1.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this Instruction is to provide information regarding the support
which can be given to the USO by uniformed officials.
2.
BACKGROUND.
a.
Since 1941, USO has served the morale and welfare of the men and women of the
Armed Forces and their families. It has also provided an important communicative
link between the Armed Forces and the civilian communities worldwide.
b.
USO program categories of service are designed to be broad enough to articulate
USO's mission to the general public as well as funding resources. The five major
program categories with representative objectives and activities are:
(1)
Airport Centers
(2)
Fleet Centers
(3)
Family and Community Centers
(4)
Orientation and Interculture Program
(5)
Celebrity Entertainment.
3.
DISCUSSION. In recognition of these positive benefits, the Secretary of Transportation
and the Secretary of Defense have maintained a close relationship with and supported the
