Division. He was soon promoted to Captain and then to Rear Admiral. He then became Chief of the
Office of Merchant Marine Safety until his retirement in 1970. His actions and vision set the course
for the Coast Guard's marine safety, security and environmental protection programs.
5. ELIGIBILITY. Nominees for this award must have demonstrated significant achievements in the
areas of marine safety, security and environmental protection nationally and internationally.
Nominees (both military and civilian) must neither be employed nor under contract with the Coast
Guard at the time of nomination. Retired Coast Guard (military and civilian) nominees must have
continued to contribute in some civilian capacity after retirement in order to be eligible for this
award. The sole intention of the RADM Charles P. Murphy Award is to recognize those nominees
that have documented lifetime achievements. There are other appropriate means, such as military
and civilian personal awards, as well as Public Service Awards, to honor personnel for other
noteworthy accomplishments.
6. PROCEDURES. Nominations must be submitted in memorandum format and must specifically
document at least six examples of lifetime achievements in the areas of marine safety, security and
environmental protection. The examples must include specific accomplishments and the impact of
these accomplishments. Of the six examples, at least two must detail significant international
contributions. Recipients of the RADM Charles P. Murphy award will receive a personalized plaque
and their name will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque in the office of the Assistant Commandant for
Marine Safety, Security and Environmental Protection.
