PURPOSE. This instruction prescribes procedures for requesting the development of new
nautical charts, modification of the coverage of existing nautical charts, or improvements to
navigational publications.
2.
DISCUSSION..
a.
National Ocean Service (NOS) and Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic/Topographic
Center (DMAHTC) provide nautical charts and related publications to all Coast Guard
units.
b.
NOS produces nautical charts, U.S. Coast Pilots, and Tide and Tidal Current Tables for
the waters of the United States and its territories. DMAHTC produces nautical charts of
foreign waters and a few selected U.S. ports. DMAHTC also produces Sailing Directions
and List of Lights for foreign waters.
c.
Commandant (G-NSR-3) is the Coast Guard liaison between NOS and DMA on all
matters involving the production and distribution of nautical charts and related
publications.
d.
The selection of nautical charts and publications available from NOS and DMAHTC is
quite extensive and should satisfy the requirements for most Coast Guard operations.
