Subj: OBLIGATED SERVICE RESULTING FROM AIRCRAFT TRANSITION

1. PURPOSE. To increase the obligated service requirement for aviators completing aircraft
transition training and publish the applicable guidelines.
2. ACTION. Area and district commanders, commanders of maintenance and logistics commands,
commanding officers of headquarters units, assistant commandants for directorates, Chief
Counsel, and special staff offices at Headquarters shall inform all officers potentially affected by
this policy.
3. DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. Reference (a) will be corrected to reflect this change.
4. DISCUSSION. To realize a reasonable return on the significant investment incurred to
transition aviators into different aircraft, the Coast Guard must retain qualified officers on active
duty for a significant period after training is completed.
5. POLICY. A member must accept, in writing, six years of obligated service before Commander,
Coast Guard Personnel Command (CGPC-opm-2) will issue him or her orders to receive an
aircraft transition. The following guidelines govern application of obligated service
requirements: a. Aviators who request and receive aircraft transition training will incur a six-
year obligated service requirement with the exception of the following:

Flight students receiving their initial qualification.
