1. PURPOSE. This Instruction outlines the procedures for application, screening, selection,
assignment, and utilization of area, reserve force, and other commandant-designated
command master chiefs (CMCs).
2. ACTION. Area and district commanders, commanders of maintenance and logistics
commands, Superintendent, commanding officers of headquarters units; assistant
commandants for directorates, Chief Counsel and special staff offices at Headquarters shall
ensure compliance with the provisions of this Instruction.
3. DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. Command Master Chief Program, COMDTINST 1306.1 is
cancelled.
4. DISCUSSION.
a. CMCs uphold the highest standards of professionalism and stimulate communication at
all levels of command throughout the Coast Guard. Although CMCs are not in the chain
of command, they strengthen it by working within the chain of command whenever
