U.S. Coast Guard Common Operating Environment (USCG COE)
3.1. Technical Architecture Layer
This layer consists of the components that make up the Technical Architecture. This
includes file servers, database servers, peripherals, and the network and related hardware that
connects the computers. A more detailed description is found in the Standard Workstation
Architecture, and the C4I and Sensors Baseline Architecture documents.
3.2. Kernel Layer
Operating System.
A COE kernel will always contain the operating system and windowing environment, but it
will also include the following features:
3.2.1. Operating System (OS) and Windowing Services.
The operating system provides a standard release of a vendor-specific OS and a specified
set of patches that must be applied to guarantee a standard runtime environment and well-
behaved execution of layered COE variants.
3.2.2. System Management Services.
The System Management Services functional element contains the software necessary to
perform basic system administration tasks such as:
