COMMANDANT INSTRUCTION 5756.1
Subj:
Honorary Coast Guard Aviators
1.
PURPOSE. This instruction establishes procedures for the nomination and designation of
Honorary Coast Guard Aviators and assigns responsibility for maintaining the official list of
honorees.
2.
DIRECTIVE AFFECTED. Commandant Instruction M5728.2B will be revised to include
the contents of this instruction.
3.
BACKGROUND. The practice of officially designating Honorary Naval Aviators began in
October 1949. Since 1991 marks the seventy-fifth anniversary year of Coast Guard aviation,
this offers an ideal opportunity to establish a similar program for the Coast Guard.
4.
DISCUSSION. Designation as an Honorary Coast Guard Aviator shall not be conferred
lightly. The following selection criteria apply:
a.
Nominees may be either military or civilian.
b.
Nominees need not be qualified pilots.
c.
Nominees must have made an extraordinary contribution to Coast Guard aviation which
served to enhance the missions and/or traditions of Coast Guard aviation. Such
contributions may include one or more of the following:
(1) A specific act of an historic or heroic nature.
(2) A contribution to the human aspects of Coast Guard aviation such as training or
aerospace medicine.
